Climate in Alaska
Of all the areas we studied Alaska showed some of the most severe climate change, sometimes temperatures rising faster than 1'F per decade. Below we present some of sample graphs. We looked at Three Cities in Alaska, Barrow, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

Barrow

Barrow is America's northern most city. Our study showed Barrow's average lows to be rising at 0.8'F and the highs at 0.9'F per decade. The most sever change in Barrow is occurring in December, both high and low temperatures are rising at more than 1'F per decade. Even with the large oscillations we can see the increase. This is particularly true with the lowest lows (green arrow) which appear to be rising faster than the averages.

Barrow's climate is changing the least in August. It is hard to see any change against the annual variations. Our linear best fit still shows 0.3'F increase per decade.
In April the change is rather easy to see since the increase is larger than the annual variations. Before 1976 lows are below -10 about half of the time. After 1989 average lows don't go below -10'F again.
June also has change that is quite easy to see. Before 1978 highs rarely go above 39'F and lows rarely go above 31'F. After 1988 temperatures rarely go below those values. (green lines.)

Anchorage

Anchorage is located on the south coast of Alaska. Our study showed the average lows in Anchorage to be rising at about 0.9'F per decade and the highs at 0.5'F per decade. Anchorage shows its most sever climate change in February when low temperatures are rising at the alarming rate of 1.7'F per decade.

Anchorage shows the least change in October. During this fall moth high temperatures might even be dropping. However, the low temperature linear best fit is rising.

Fairbanks

Fairbanks is located near the center of Alaska. We found Fairbanks' average lows to be rising at 0.8'F and the highs at 0.6'F per decade. Fairbanks is showing the greatest change in December. Even with the downward trend in temperatures through the 1980's the linear best fit still shows an average rise of 1.7'F per decade. The lowest of the low temperatures are rising even faster.

Fairbanks shows the least change in October where temperatures since 1955 appear to have been falling. However, since 1995 a rising trend appears to be evident.
The most interesting month for Fairbanks is July. Here it's easy to show that before 1965 low temperatures tended to stay below 51'F, but after 1985 low temperatures are tending to stay above 51'F. The lowest of the lows also appear to be rising rapidly.
