Climate in Coastal California

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, California is well known for its rapid development and lack of public transportation resulting in photochemical smog. On most summer days the nearby mountains are not visible through the smog. This smog may be a factor in LA's pattern of dropping daytime temperatures and rising nighttime lows.

LA is warming the most in January. january daytime highs are rising at 0.4'F per decade, and the nighttime lows are rising at 0.7'F per decade. The green arrows indicate that the rise appears to be occurring in jumps.

The fastest drops are occurring in July and August. For both the highs are dropping at 0.2'F per decade. But the lows are rising.

June is very interesting because the rapidly rising phase ended abruptly in 1981.

San Diego, California

San Diego also shows dropping high temperatures and rising low temperatures.

San Diego's fastest rise in lows occurs in March with temperatures rising at 0.8'F per decade, even with the high temperatures level. Before 1970 most of the March lows are below 54'F. After 1991 most of the lows are above 54'F.

San Diego's highs drop the fastest in December at 0.5'F per decade. Before 1965 most of December's highs are above 69'F. After 1990, all of December's highs are below 69'F.

October is interesting because the drop in the highs against the rise in the lows is quite obvious.
